Exeter varsity football earned a dramatic 38-36 victory on the road at Choate on Saturday, capped by
Henry Baldic's clutch 33-yard game-winning field goal as time expired.
Big Red carried a 13-7 lead into halftime before the game erupted into a second-half shootout. The two teams combined for 54 points after the break, trading big plays and momentum swings all the way down to the final possession.
Quarterback
Jake Attaway was outstanding throughout, leading Exeter in both rushing and passing while making several highlight-reel plays. His connection with wide receiver
Caden Drobinski proved to be hard to stop, as the duo linked up for three touchdowns on the afternoon. On the defensive side of the ball,
Carter Johnson and
Joe Kim anchored a strong effort for Big Red.Â
With the score tied late, Exeter mounted one last drive. On the opening play, Attaway hit Drobinski for a 40-yard strike down the right sideline, then followed with a 25-yard scramble to push Exeter into field goal range. From there, Baldic—who had been sharp all afternoon on kickoffs and extra points—calmly nailed the 33-yard game-winner to lift Exeter to victory.
Exeter will return to action when they play host to Cheshire Academy in the home-opener inside Phelps Stadium on Saturday with kickoff slated for 3:00p.
