Sports Performance

Our Vision
Our mission is to foster a safe, supportive, and positive training environment that motivates the entire Exeter community to achieve their goals. Our priority is to build overall confidence regardless of the fitness journey. The Sports Performance department is committed to creating a space to explore, learn, and develop both physically and mentally throughout your time at Exeter and beyond.

Our Goals
  • Reduce the risk of injury
    • Our priority is to keep students healthy and progressing in the right direction as they continue to grow and develop.
    • We will supply them with sound programming and appropriate coaching that focuses on overall movement quality and proper technique while building total body strength and stability.
    • We work closely with the Athletic Training staff to evaluate potential risks that come with sport, analyze individual movement patterns and limitations, and program the proper corrective exercises and routines that will help reduce the risk of injury.
  • Build a foundation of strength and speed
    • Through our pursuit of scientifically sound training principles and methods, students will be set up with a program that address strength, power, speed, energy system development, agility, mobility, and recovery.
    • We believe in being brilliant at the basics – which include squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, stabilizing, and rotating. We will carefully progress students throughout their time at Phillips Exeter and they will leave with solid foundational movement competency.
    • We consistently test and evaluate measures of strength, power, and speed throughout the year using top of the line sports science technology.
  • Create value in the process and build confidence
    • We take an educational approach to training, regardless of the sport or athlete. There is a clearly communicated "why" behind programming, encouraging students to have an active role in the process.
    • The fitness center is a space that encourage individuals to embrace challenges and overcome obstacles, fostering resilience and a growth mindset.

Mission & Value Statement
At Philips Exeter Academy, we provide comprehensive orthopedic care for the Exeter community. We value practical evidence-based, patient-centered care. In the domains of injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance our work is integrated in sound human performance principals. Our goal is to foster a safe, supportive, and positive environment and our care is grounded in respect and compassion for those we work with as they become stewards of their own health at Exeter and beyond.

About Our Department
A multi-disciplinary team, the academy medical director oversees the athletic training staff, physician assistants, nutritionists, and nurses. The sports medicine department is responsible for the orthopedic care of all Exeter students, and they partner closely with the academy sports performance staff and sports dietitian on preventing orthopedic injuries and working to optimize physical performance.

Facility Information and Hours:
In support of our students' health and wellness, athletic trainers utilize three primary facilities for the care of students.
  • Centrally, students receive orthopedic care in the Athletic Training Center located on the first floor of Love gymnasium. This well-appointed facility includes modern modalities, cold and warm whirlpools, evaluation tables, and rehab space. This facility is open generally from 1:00pm to the end of sports games/practices, six days a week.
  • As a support to our student athletes, the Bravo Athletic Training Facility, located at Phelps stadium is utilized for emergency treatment of students once athletics practices and contest have begun. This facility is open six days a week at the begging of spots/practices to the conclusion of sports and practices.
  • As additional facility supports, our contracted physical therapist team utilizes a separate Athletic Training Center annex in the support of student rehabilitation. This facility is located directly across from the Downer Family Fitness Center allowing for shared use of this facility to improve access to functional rehabilitation opportunities as students' progress in their rehabilitation journey. This facility is open three days a week from 2:00- 6:30 when the physical therapist is on site.

Unique Program Offerings:
As part of the holistic care of a student at PEA, the Athlete Health and Performance Department offers several unique programs for our students.
  • Therapeutic Exercise: In partnership with PEA Physical Education and Athletics this, for-credit class, meets three to four times each term. Students are enrolled in this class after consultation with the sports medicine team and are, often, students who need this time in their schedule to work with our contracted physical therapist here on campus. In addition to work in physical therapy, students also take part in additional program offerings that include mindfulness, yoga, and sports/mental skills building all aimed at aiding the student in their recovery. As a student progresses in their healing, they may also work with the sports performance staff to advance their work in the weight room.

Sports Nutrition

To maximize sports performance, it is crucial that student-athletes fuel their bodies before, during, and after sports practices, training sessions, and competition. Having a well-fueled body allows a student to participate at peak levels as they can draw energy from their reserves and fuel their muscles and brains.

Here at Exeter, our board- certified sports dietitian is available to work one-on-one with student-athletes so they can reach their nutritional goals. In addition to working with individual student-athletes, our sports dietitian meets with teams and works with Dining Services to strengthen the nutritional offerings here at the academy.
Our sports dietitian comes to the athletic training center one afternoon per week to meet with students and she also meets with students three days per week in the Lamont Health and Wellness Center.
