About Exeter Athletics

From Mr. Baseden

Welcome to Exeter Athletics, a place where tradition meets innovation, and where every contest is an opportunity to showcase the remarkable talents of our student-athletes.

At Exeter, we believe that educational athletics is a crucial part of the educational experience. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or new to a sport, our program is designed to help you develop your skills, character, and teamwork. Our coaches are committed not only to teaching the fundamentals of each sport but also to instilling values like resiliency, integrity, and sportsmanship. We are proud of our rich history of athletic excellence, a legacy that has been built over generations and where interscholastic athletics built its foundation.

Exeter Athletics is a vibrant community where lifelong relationships and memories are made and where Harkness extends beyond the table. Our athletes compete at the highest levels and we aim to provide every student with the resources they need to succeed.

We encourage every student to find their passion, challenge themselves, and push beyond their limits. Whether you’re on the field competing or cheering from the sidelines or, you are a vital part of the Big Red spirit that unites us all. We are truly thankful for our community, both near and far, and are excited to continue to build our tradition for many years to come.

Go Big Red!

Exeter Athletics Mission Statement
The interscholastic athletic program at Phillips Exeter Academy embodies the school’s core value: knowledge and goodness integrated. Our program, grounded in integrity, promotes character development and collaboration. We believe that athletic competition is a powerful teacher. Physical and mental challenges in a team context offer athletes the opportunity to develop leadership skills, self–confidence, and a commitment to others that will inspire them to lead productive and active lives.

Program Goals
  • Measure the success of our program by the degree to which individuals and teams embody the core values of the mission statement.
  • Staff teams with coaches of good character, and competence in teaching technical skills, and who possess the ability to motivate and relate positively to student athletes and adults.
  • Celebrate the joy of competition and the benefits of physical fitness.
  • Develop individual athletes and teams that are constantly improving, hardworking, disciplined, and schooled in the fundamental aspects of their sport.
  • Allocate equipment and resources to support the mission of the program equitably and appropriately for participants of each gender at all skill levels.
  • Provide a safe environment for all athletic activities.
  • Produce teams that are competitive and strive to win.
  • Offer a variety of team sports and encourage a breadth of athletic experiences.
  • Expect all members of the Phillips Exeter Academy community to demonstrate respect for opponents, officials, and the rules of competition.
  • Develop in athletes an appreciation for the specific traditions, rules, and cultures of their sport.
  • Build healthy, enjoyable, and supportive team environments based on trust with no tolerance for hazing.
Gender Policy
Phillips Exeter Academy is fully committed to supporting athletes of all genders in our athletics program. In 2018, we adopted a Gender Support Plan that articulates the options and support available to students. Transgender and gender non-conforming (GNC) athletes have the choice of sports teams, pending try-outs and scheduling availability. Our athletics program will continue to support athletics of all genders.
