Champs! Girls hockey skates to Patsy Odden Large School title

The Phillips Exeter Academy girls hockey team captured the Patsy Odden Large School Championship on Sunday, defeating Choate Rosemary Hall, 4–2, to claim the program's first championship on the ice since 2000. The victory capped an outstanding season for Big Red, which finished the winter with a 19–7–2 record, while senior forward Maria Gray was named Tournament MVP for her standout play throughout the postseason.

Choate struck first in the opening period with a shorthanded goal, briefly seizing the momentum. Exeter responded four minutes later when, back on the power play, Gray charged the middle of the zone and flipped a backhanded shot to the upper corner to level the score at 1-1.

Exeter grabbed its first lead early in the second period. Off a faceoff from the left circle, Paisley Meyer gained possession and quickly ripped a shot past the Choate goaltender, giving Big Red a 2–1 advantage that held through the remainder of the frame.
Meyer wasted little time adding to the lead in the third. Just 30-seconds into the period, Meyer gathered a pass from Gray, skated from right to left across the net and snapped a shot into the top-left corner to make it 3–1 Exeter.

Choate pulled back within one midway through the period when a shot from the point found its way through traffic and into the net, cutting the Exeter lead to 3–2 with 10:37 remaining. The final minutes were tense, but Big Red's defense and goaltending held firm. With 6:30 left, goaltender Eva Mye Whyte delivered a pair of critical saves through a crowd in front to preserve the one goal lead.

Moments later, a shot from Grace Riley deflected in front of the crease and rolled dangerously across the ice before being cleared away. After Exeter was assessed a penalty with 4:30 remaining, Big Red successfully killed off the Choate power play to keep the one-goal edge intact.

Exeter finally sealed the victory with 1:39 remaining when Erin Sears won a faceoff and quickly knocked the puck into the net, giving Big Red a 4–2 lead and sending the Exeter bench into celebration.
