Exeter girls hockey delivered one of the most dramatic victories of the season on Wednesday afternoon, rallying from a three-goal deficit in the third period to defeat Middlesex, 4–3, in overtime in the quarterfinal round of the Patsy Odden (Large) Tournament. With the thrilling comeback, Big Red advances to the semifinal round and will host Buckingham, Browne & Nichols on Saturday.
Despite carrying much of the possession and play throughout the evening, Exeter found itself chasing the game early. Middlesex struck first with just 14 seconds remaining in the opening period to take a 1–0 lead into the intermission. Big Red began to find its offensive rhythm early in the second period, generating several quality chances—including a pair of shots that rang off the post—but Middlesex capitalized on a breakaway with 10:22 left in the period to extend the lead to 2–0.
Exeter continued to apply steady pressure, but Middlesex pushed the advantage to 3–0 with a goal 5:50 into the third period, leaving Big Red with a significant deficit and just under half a period remaining.
The comeback began with 9:55 left in regulation.
Grace Riley gathered the puck near the blue line, skated through the slot to between the circles, and snapped a shot top shelf for Exeter's first goal of the game to make it 3–1.
Big Red struck again with 3:50 remaining. Riley intercepted a Middlesex pass in the neutral zone and quickly moved the puck cross-ice to
Mia Griffith. Griffith's shot was redirected in front by
Paisley Meyer, cutting the deficit to 3–2 and energizing the Exeter bench.
With time winding down, Exeter pulled goaltender Eva Mye White for an extra attacker in the final minute. The pressure paid off with just 47 seconds remaining.
Erin Sears moved the puck from the corner up the wall to
Maria Gray, who quickly fed Riley in the slot. Riley buried a one-timer to tie the game at 3–3 and send the crowd into a frenzy as the game headed to overtime.
The momentum carried into the extra period, where Big Red continued to press. With 8:54 left in overtime, Riley made a tremendous play to keep the puck inside the offensive zone before sliding a pass to Meyer. Meyer stepped into the slot, walked in on the goaltender, and slipped a shot five-hole to complete the stunning comeback and give Exeter the 4–3 victory.
Meyer's two goals also pushed her past the 100 career point milestone, joining linemate
Maria Gray in the exclusive century mark club.
With the win, Big Red moves on to the Patsy Odden Tournament semifinals and will host Buckingham, Browne & Nichols on Saturday.
