Exeter girls hockey advanced to the championship game of the Patsy Odden Large School Tournament with a convincing 5–1 victory over Buckingham Browne & Nichols on Saturday afternoon, earning Big Red a chance to compete for the program's first title since 2000.
Exeter controlled much of the play, carrying possession and generating quality chances in the offensive end in the early goings. Both teams earned power-play opportunities in the first period, but the game remained scoreless thanks in large part to the steady play of goaltender
Eva Mai Whyte, who turned aside several BBN chances to keep the contest even through the opening period.
Big Red wasted little time breaking through in the second period. Just one minute into the second stanza,
Erin Sears jumped on a loose puck in the offensive zone and snapped a shot top shelf to give Exeter a 1–0 lead.
The momentum continued moments later. After a shot from the point by
Grace Riley,
Maria Gray pounced on the rebound and pushed it across the line to double the Big Red advantage at 2–0.
Exeter continued to press, and midway through the period Riley added to the lead. Following a strong effort to keep the puck in the offensive zone by Big Red, Riley found space in the slot and fired a wrist shot into the top corner to extend the lead to 3–0.
In the third period, Exeter put the game firmly out of reach. At the 14:56 mark,
Paisley Meyer led the breakout and drove the play into the offensive zone, unleashing a shot from between the dots. Once again Gray was in the right place at the right time, collecting the rebound and sliding the puck into the back of the net for her second goal of the afternoon and a 4–0 Exeter lead.
Buckingham Browne & Nichols broke through with a power-play goal with eight minutes remaining, but Big Red quickly answered. With 3:45 left in regulation,
Lainey Fortney capped the scoring by finishing a chance to make it 5–1 and seal the victory.
With the win, Exeter advances to the Patsy Odden Large School Championship and will look to capture its first title since the program claimed the Division I crown in 2000. Big Red will face Choate Rosemary Hall at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday at the Dexter School.
