Gray's hat trick leads girls hockey to 16th win of the season

Exeter closed out the home portion of its regular season in emphatic fashion on Wednesday afternoon, skating past Portsmouth Abbey, 4–1. The win improves Big Red to 16-6-2 on the year — the program's highest single-season win total since 2008-09.

Maria Gray set the tone early and never let it waver. With 6:20 remaining in the opening period, Gray gathered the puck in the left circle and wired a shot through traffic that found the top shelf to give Exeter a 1–0 lead. Just under four minutes later, Big Red's power play struck. Gray again created the opportunity, sliding a crisp pass from the circle to the top of the crease where Rylie Choi was there to redirect the puck into the back of the net to extend Exeter's lead to 2-0.

Portsmouth Abbey answered with 1:22 left in the first to cut the deficit in half, but Exeter responded a strong second period. Midway through the frame, Grace Reilly fired a shot that created a rebound in front, and Gray pounced, backhanding the puck home to restore the two-goal cushion at 3–1. Gray completed her hat trick moments later in highlight-reel fashion, taking a feed from Reilly, driving straight down the middle of the offensive zone, and lifting another shot into the top shelf.

Lily Sabol was terrific in between the pipes to earn the win.

Exeter will look to carry their momentum into the regular-season finale at Exeter/Andover Weekend, when Big Red faces Andover at 12:00pm.
