Winter E/A delivers with excitement

Exeter and Andover renewed their storied rivalry this weekend, delivering a thrilling day of competition filled with intense battles, dramatic finishes, and an electric atmosphere. From the hardwood to the ice to the mat, Big Red fought hard in every matchup, with the crowd bringing endless energy and school spirit to the day's events.

The biggest highlight came from the boys varsity basketball team, who took down Andover 70-61 in front of a packed gym. Exeter controlled the pace from the start, executing on both ends of the floor and feeding off the home crowd's energy. Senior Ryder Frost led the way for Big Red, finishing with 29 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Luke Soden added 16 points while Cade Furse finished with 12. Rob Blandburg added eight points, eight rebounds, and three blocks for the hosts.

The boys JV basketball team delivered a heart-stopping finish in a 52-51 victory over the Blue. John Griffin was fouled with 0.1 seconds left on the clock and sunk a clutch free throw to seal the victory and send the Exeter faithful into celebration mode.

On the ice, the girls' varsity hockey team fought to a hard-earned 1-1 tie in an intense, back-and-forth affair. Andover opened the scoring with a goal in the first five minutes of play. Their advantage would hold until 7:36 in the third when Dominique Reiher evened the score. Reiher corralled a leading pass from Emma Shu and – with two Andover defenders on her back – flipped a backend through the legs of the Andover goalie to put Big Red on the board. Both teams would have their chances in the waning moments of the third and in overtime, but defenses stood tall and the score remained 1-1. Exeter netminder Allie Bell was outstanding throughout the game, making many impressive stops to limit the Andover offense.

The boys varsity hockey team battled the Blue in a thriller, but ultimately came up short by a score of 4-3. Andover put the first tally of the day on the board just 1:07 into play before Brendan St. Peter tied it late in the period with a wrister from the left side and passed the glove side of the Andover netminder to go into the first intermission 1-1. Big Red returned from the locker room and had their offense in gear as Max Lowe and Noah Poinsett-Yoshida each potted a goal in the opening three minutes of play in the second as the hosts built a 3-1 lead. Andover would battle back and score three times in the period to stake a 4-3 edge. Big Red had a chance late, including with a late power play opportunity, but the Blue defense stood strong to preserve the 4-3 win.

The Red and Blue also squared off on the wrestling mat, including the first-ever Exeter vs. Andover girls dual match and just the second girls dual match in NEPSAC history. In the undisputed match of the day, Bella Bueno capped off her remarkable career with a gutsy overtime victory over a tough Andover opponent. Jack Breaks also finished on a high note with a 14-3 major decision while Michael Yoon broke open a deadlocked match with a textbook Peterson Roll to score a pin for Big Red. Zain Reza moved up a weight class and cruised to a 7-2 victory and Ese Okparavero earned a second period win. Big Blue captured victories in the girls dual, 27-3, and the varsity meet by a score of 53-25.

The Andover boys JV hockey team skated to a 5-3 come-from-behind win while the Blue also scored a victory in the girls JV hockey game by a score of 4-3.

Girls basketball faced tough Andover squads, with the varsity team falling 57-34 and JV battling but coming up short, 41-19.

Big Red will now await playoff pairings as New England tournament play will kick off this Wednesday.
