Exeter boys hockey earned a 6-4 victory in a Friday night thriller on the road at Cushing.
Big Red jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period as
Tyler Callander and
Tyler Montecalvo each found the back of the net. Cushing would answer early in the second period with a pair of power play goals to even the game at 2-2.
Dryden Dervish gave Big Red the lead once again when he potted a shorthanded goal midway through the period before the Penguins answered just 1:25 later as the game moved to 3-3.
Exeter would close the period with two unanswered as
Gavin Fitzpatrick finished a feed from
Jack Rakauskas before
Noah Poinsett-Yoshida added Big Red's second shorthanded tally of the period as the guests took a 5-3 edge into the third.
Cushing would cut the deficit to one with a power play goal in the opening five minutes of the final frame, but Exeter stood strong and closed out the win when
Will Cavanagh added an empty-netter to seal the victory.
Brendan Petraco was outstanding in goal for Exeter, making 42 saves in the victory. Big Red returns to action on Wednesday, February 5 when they travel to Holderness at 4:15p.
