The Exeter Athletics Department has announced Adam White '01 as the newest head coach of the boys varsity lacrosse program.
White comes to Phillips Exeter from St. Sebastian's School in Needham, Massachusetts, where he served as an English teacher since 2012 and head lacrosse coach since 2017. During his tenure with the lacrosse team, the Arrows won two Independent School League Championships, twice made it to the semi-finals of the Geico National Tournament, and were regularly ranked in the top-25 nationally, rising as high as #5 in the country. His players have gone on to play lacrosse at many of the nation's top programs, including Duke, Cornell, Harvard, Penn, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Michigan, Denver, Johns Hopkins, Tufts, Amherst, and Middlebury. In 2019, White was named the ISL's Coach of the Year, and in 2022 USA Lacrosse honored him with the Gerry Carroll Award, given to one high school coach nationwide for exemplary service on and off the field.Â
"We are excited to welcome Adam back to the Exeter community," said Jason Baseden, Director of Physical Education and Athletics. "Big Red lacrosse has a proud tradition, and Adam's experience as a coach, teach, mentor, and player will help carry that legacy forward. We look forward to his leadership of the boys lacrosse program and the positive impact he will have on campus."
White is also a successful writer. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University, and his novel,Â
The Midcoast, was published in 2022 by Penguin Random House, becoming a
New York Times' Editors' Choice and a national bestseller. An adaptation of the novel is currently in development with 20th Century television and FX. Earlier in his career, he was nominated for an Emmy for his work as a documentary producer onÂ
Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare and served as story consultant on the Academy Award-nominated documentaryÂ
Cartel Land.Â
White grew up in Damariscotta, Maine, and came to Exeter as a prep, graduating in 2001. At Exeter, he earned varsity letters in football, hockey, and lacrosse. He then went on to Dartmouth College, where he was a four-year starter for the lacrosse team, earning All-Ivy and Academic All-Ivy honors. The team won a share of the 2003 Ivy League Championship and played in the NCAA tournament. White was a co-captain of the team his senior year.Â
White takes the reigns of the program from
Bill Glennon. Glennon, who has been with the program for 34 years including 16 as head coach, will remain with the team as an assistant coach.
"
Bill Glennon is synonymous with Exeter Athletics and he has been invaluable throughout this process," said Baseden. "We are grateful for his many years of service to Big Red and our lacrosse program and excited that he will help usher in the newest era with Adam."
"I couldn't be more excited to come home to Exeter," White said. "This place is very special to me. I love it here. I'm enormously grateful to be able to teach English and coach lacrosse at the school where I was first encouraged to pursue those passions. I can't wait to get to work."
