THREE-PEAT! Boys track and field captures third straight New England title, girls place second

The Exeter boys track and field team captured their third consecutive New England championship at the 2025 New England Prep School Track Association (NEPSTA) Division I Championships, held at Deerfield Academy. The girls team also delivered a remarkable performance, earning a strong second-place finish in a highly competitive field.

Jaylen Bennett and Jannah Maguire each delivered standout performances and were recognized as the Most Outstanding Performer of the meet for the boys and girls competitions, respectively. Bennett captured New England titles in four events, while Maguire claimed three titles and added a runner-up finish, leading the way in a day filled with impressive efforts across the entire Exeter roster.

The Exeter boys opened and closed the meet with dominant performances in the relays. In the 4x100-meter relay, the team of Elia Warner, Bennett, Alex Sahinoglu, and Luke Rogers edged out Andover in a thrilling photo finish. Their winning time of 42.69 seconds was just 0.10 seconds ahead of their rivals. Later in the day, Exeter's 4x400-meter relay squad—composed of Rhys Cunningham, Lucian Gleiser, Collin Moore, and Jaylen Bennett—capped the meet with another emphatic victory, finishing five seconds ahead of the next closest team with a time of 3:22.38.

Bennett had a standout day, collecting four New England titles. In addition to the two relays, Bennett won the 400 meters in 48.00 seconds, nearly two seconds faster than the second-place finisher, and added another individual title in the 200 meters, where he broke the meet record with a time of 21.29 seconds.

Alex Sahinoglu contributed significantly to Exeter's title run as well. He claimed first place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.72 seconds and placed third in the 300-meter hurdles in 40.64 seconds. Lucian Gleiser was crowned champion in the 800 meters after cruising to a winning time of 1:53.36.

In the field events, Exeter showed well in the javelin, with Isaiah Reese placing second with a throw of 168 feet, 3 inches, and Carter Johnson following in third with a mark of 163 feet, 4 inches. Griffin Breault finished fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 40 feet, 2.5 inches.

On the girls' side, Exeter also shined, especially in the relays and sprints. The 4x100-meter relay team of Steph Handte, Jannah Maguire, Sam Benochi, and Gianna Phipps took second place with a time of 48.31 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay team of Benochi, Phipps, Ayana Okuneye, and Maguire closed the meet with a commanding victory. Their time of 3:52.28 not only earned them a New England title but also set a new meet record, finishing eight seconds ahead of the runner-up. This marked the second consecutive season that Exeter has broken the meet record in the 4x400, following the 3:53.60 set last spring by Phipps, Maguire, and then-seniors Tate Kelly '24 and Tenley Nelson '24.

Jannah Maguire won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.32 seconds, breaking a NEPSTA meet record that had stood since 2013. She then shattered another meet record in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing in 42.59 seconds—more than a full second faster than the previous record set just last year. Gianna Phipps was equally as impressive, and won the 400 meters in 56.34 seconds and followed it up with another title in the 200 meters, crossing the line in 24.71 seconds.

Steph Handte also brought home a New England title, winning the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 3.5 inches. She added a third-place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet. In the throwing events, Genesis Guobadia placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 97 feet, 9 inches. On the track, Ava Bullock added points for Exeter with a fourth-place finish in the 3000 meters, running a time of 10:55.17.

This latest championship marks the fifth New England title for a Big Red program during the 2024–2025 school year, joining earlier titles won by football, boys cross country, girls swimming and diving, and cycling.
