Exeter crew brings back hardware from historic Head of the Charles

Exeter crew competed at the historic Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon and brought back some hardware in the process. The Head of the Charles is the largest regatta in the world and features more than 12,000 athletes from around the globe. The course travel's 5,000 meters, includes more than 12,000 athletes, representing more than 40 countries.

The Big Red women's youth 4+ boat of Victoria Mabardy '25, Ava Cathey '25, Evie Gaylord '25, Chloe Bosma '26, and Sophia Turner '25 captured a third-place finish and conquered the twists and turns of the Charles River in a masterful time of 18:48.279. This marks the second straight year that Exeter claimed third overall in a field of 90 talented crews from around the world and the fourth straight year with a top five overall finish. Last year, Cathey and Turner were joined by Jane Park '24, Athena Sperantsas '24, and Eden Fisher '24 to race to a medal finish with a time of 19:31.934.

"This boat incorporated two new rowers and a new coxswain and improved time from last year and did an impressive job on the course," said girls head crew coach Pete Cathey. "Their exceptional rhythm and drive powered them to a spectacular finish. To medal at the Head of the Charles, an extremely competitive event, is truly unique and we are so proud to have members of Exeter crew among the few that propel themselves onto the medal podium."

In addition to the women's youth 4+ boat, Big Red featured a crew in the men's youth 8+ and the women's youth 8+ sections to compete against a strong, international field.

The men's youth 8+ of Rohit Kantamneni '25, Ian Kim '25, Arian Khichadia '25, Monte Wood '25, Peter Roper '26, Mason Cotter '25, Matt Minor '26, Emmett Nomellini '25, and Ryan Chen '25 careened through the course in 15:27.550 to finish in 11th place out of 90 crews in the events.

"The men's youth eight competition bring the best youth, club, and school programs from around the world, and the boys put together a remarkable finish," said boys crew head coach Albert Leger. "I must commend our coxswain Rohit Kantamneni for maneuvering this difficult course and passing a handful of boats throughout the course. While only nine athletes were competing in the boat, this was a complete team effort. The entire Exeter crew trained very hard this fall to represent the school incredibly well. I am so appreciative of all the athletes who pushed each other so that the crew could achieve at such a high level."

The women's youth 8+ boat of Elsa Janicki '26, Bella Tyson Montgomery '27, Sophia Slosek '25, Eleanor Unger '26, Avery McClelland '25, Charlotte Dassori '26, Zoe Miller '26, Amelia Post '25, and Ava Spaulding '25 also put forth a strong performance on the Charles and finished 46th overall out of 90 crews. Big Red completed the meandering course in 18:18.557.

"The women's youth eight boat overcame an especially hectic starting line and kept their composure and put forth a strong race. They had an effective rhythm, were focused, and moved well across the finish line."
