Panos Voulgaris

Coach Voulgaris was tabbed as the Exeter head football coach in 2021. Prior to his arrival, he was the head coach at the Taft School (2008-11), Episcopal High School (2012-17), and Noble & Greenough (2018-20), where he engineered the turnaround of all three programs bringing each of them to championships and producing college football players across the nation. Likewise, Coach Voulgaris has quickly built Exeter into one of the top football teams in New England. In 2021, Coach Voulgaris took over an Exeter team that had lost 35 of its previous 37 games and has led them to a 15-3 record over the last eighteen games, including an outright Northeast Prep Conference championship and NEPSAC bowl berth in 2023.

In the nation’s most historic high school football rivalry—Exeter and Andover—Voulgaris has coached Exeter to three straight victories, reversing a trend in the longstanding rivalry.

Success has followed Voulgaris on the sidelines at each one of his stops. While his teams have been consistent winners, they have also been recognized for their excellent team culture where sportsmanship, integrity, and fun have been at the heart of the experience.

In his first head coaching stint, Voulgaris took over a failing Taft School program in 2008 that had lost 51 of its previous 56 games. The trajectory of the team quickly changed course as Voulgaris led the school to an 8-0 season and a New England title just three years later, still the program’s only undefeated championship season in the last 35 years. Voulgaris enjoyed similar success at Episcopal, rebuilding the program into a Washington, D.C. power. Episcopal put together a string of five-straight winning seasons for the first time in over fifty years and won back-to-back Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) Championships in 2015 and 2016, solidifying the team as one of the top prep programs in the country. From there, he took over a floundering Nobles program in 2018. In his first season, Voulgaris led the team to an 8-1 record and a NEPSAC Bowl Championship for the first time in over a decade.

Coach Voulgaris has helped place over 200 student-athletes into college programs. Along the way, several of his former players have achieved great success, including some who have gone onto the NFL. He has been selected to coach in the Under Armour All-American Game on multiple occasions where he has worked with the nation’s top high school players. In the offseason, Voulgaris travels nationally to evaluate players for the ESPN 300 and the UC Report, college football’s top recruiting service.

A former defensive back at Merrimack College, Voulgaris graduated summa cum laude and as class valedictorian prior to earning his master’s degree from Harvard University. Coach Voulgaris has taught history and physical education over the last twenty years. He and his wife Shannon—a career educator—have three children: James (8), George (7), and Charley (5).
