Bruce Shang was named head coach of Girls Varsity volleyball at Exeter in 2011 and has turned the program into a top program in the region. Big Red earned back-to-back New England championships in 2014 and 2015 before going a perfect 20-0 with another New England title in 2019. Exeter has advanced to the finals in 2017 and 2018, and made it to the final four in 2013, 2016, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Players have gone on to play at Villanova, NYU, Harvard, Brown, Georgetown, and Davidson.
In addition to coaching the girls volleyball program, Shang is also the head coach of the boys varsity volleyball program. After starting the program in 2014, Big Red volleyball won championships in 2024, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, and 2015. As a consistent favorite to win the NEPSVB league, the team will also challenge the best teams in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Players continue to play at University of Denver, University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern, Syracuse, and Texas A&M.
In addition to coaching volleyball, Shang is also the head coach of the boys varsity squash program.
Prior to joining Phillips Exeter in 2008, Shang coached at the San Francisco School in California with multiple titles in the independent school league and coached club at SF juniors in San Francisco. Shang then coached at multiple Nike camps around the country including University of San Francisco, Fairfield University, and Rutgers University. Â
Shang served 3 years as an assistant coach at Rutgers University, when the school made it to the finals of the Big East tournament.
